General rules

A professional jury will judge the artistic, literary and child-oriented qualities of the works. The winner receives €7,500 and the winning work will be published by Clavis Publishing.

  1. Each illustrator may participate in the contest, notwithstanding nationality, language or experience. Participation of groups is allowed as well. The submitted projects have to meet the requirements mentioned in the technical data.
  2. The following individuals are excluded from participation: members of the jury, staff of Clavis Publishing and the blood relations and in-laws of the members of the jury up to the second degree.
  3. The book is intended for children of the age from 2 to 7 years old. Only a children's book can therefore be eligible for award.
  4. By participating, the illustrators and/or authors guarantee that the submitted work is fully original and was never published before in any form whatsoever. They also guarantee that they have the full copyright on it and that they can transfer the full rights of first publication to Clavis Publishing.
  5. The winner receives €7,500. The jury may however come to the conclusion that no contribution has sufficient qualities to be eligible for award.
  6. The winning work will be published by Clavis Publishing, upon signing a publishing contract. Works which are not awarded with the first prize can also be recommended for publishing to Clavis Publishing by the jury.
  7. The competing works should be sent digitally.
  8. The regulations can be consulted at www.keycolours.com. The terms of entry ends on July 26, 2026.
  9. Text must be sent in the original language. If the original language is not Dutch, French, English or German, a translation in one of those four languages should be added.
  10. Each presented work must have a title, which must be mentioned explicitly. The final title will be defined in consultation with the author.
  11. The submitted works will be judged by a jury of children's books experts, including an illustrator and the winner of the previous edition. The winner of this edition will become member of the jury for the next edition.
  12. The decision of the jury will be announced in September 2026.
  13. Illustrators will retain and safeguard a copy of all submitted materials at all times.
  14. The jury decides on all cases where the regulations could have left some doubts. No correspondence will be conducted on the decisions taken. They are irrevocable.

Important — AI policy: The use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools for the creation of story content, illustrations, or preliminary sketches is strictly prohibited. Entries found to contain any material (text or visual) produced or significantly modified by AI tools will be disqualified without exception. Participants must be able to provide evidence of their creative process upon request. This clause protects the integrity of the competition and supports authentic, human creativity.

Digital entry

Use the submission form on the website to submit your work. Please make sure the files you upload contain:

  1. A children's story for ages 2 to 7, written on a max of 4 pages, divided into text blocks.
  2. A full-size mockup with all the sketches or plates of the book as they will be worked out afterwards. The text blocks are indicated on all these pages. You may put the text in the mockup.
  3. Three of the above-mentioned plates fully worked out in colour on at least 1 entire page. The chosen technique is free. The fully elaborated plates may be integrated in the mockup.
  4. Name your files using the following format:
FamilyName_FirstName_Title_of_Work_1/3
e.g. Williams_John_A_Friend_of_Mouse_1/3

Format of the book

You choose one of the following standard formats:

250 × 260 mm
290 × 210 mm portrait or landscape
235 × 325 mm

The story will be told in exactly 24 pages (cover, end paper and title page not included), starting on the left page. The original drawings should be full size, with a bleed of 5 mm.

The jury judges

Story The literary and child-oriented qualities of the story.
Vision The bringing into vision of the story.
Artistry The artistic qualities of the illustrations.

Works which have not been awarded with the first prize may also be considered for publication by Clavis. The award and the resulting picture books will be discussed in the press and at book fairs abroad. For many illustrators, this unique award is the start of a successful international career.

Algemene regels

Een vakjury beoordeelt de artistieke, literaire en kindgerichte kwaliteiten van de inzendingen. De winnaar ontvangt €7.500 en het bekroonde werk wordt door Clavis Uitgeverij uitgegeven.

  1. Elke illustrator mag aan de wedstrijd deelnemen, ongeacht nationaliteit, taal of ervaring. Ook groepsdeelname is toegestaan. De ingezonden projecten dienen te voldoen aan de eisen die vermeld staan bij de technische gegevens.
  2. Uitgesloten van deelname zijn: juryleden, personeelsleden van Clavis Uitgeverij alsmede bloed- en aanverwanten tot en met de tweede graad van juryleden.
  3. Het boek moet afgestemd zijn op een leeftijdsgroep tussen 2 en 7 jaar. Voor bekroning kan dus alleen een kinderboek in aanmerking komen.
  4. Door hun deelname aan de wedstrijd verzekeren de illustratoren en/of auteurs dat het ingezonden werk volledig oorspronkelijk is en in geen enkele vorm openbaar gemaakt is. Tevens verzekeren zij dat zij over het volledige eigendomsrecht ervan beschikken en dat zij het volledige recht op de eerste uitgave afstaan aan Clavis Uitgeverij.
  5. De uitgeloofde prijs bedraagt €7.500. De jury kan echter tot het besluit komen dat geen enkele inzending voldoende kwaliteiten heeft om voor bekroning in aanmerking te komen.
  6. Het bekroonde werk zal uitgegeven worden door Clavis Uitgeverij. Ook werken waaraan de hoofdprijs niet werd toegekend, kunnen door de jury voor publicatie aan Clavis Uitgeverij worden aanbevolen. De titel wordt in overleg met de auteur bepaald.
  7. Deelname aan de wedstrijd gebeurt digitaal.
  8. Het reglement is te raadplegen op www.keycolours.com. De inzendingstermijn loopt af op 26 juli 2026.
  9. De tekst moet in de oorspronkelijke taal geschreven zijn. Indien de oorspronkelijke taal niet het Nederlands, Frans, Engels of Duits is, dient er een vertaling in één van deze vier talen te zijn bijgevoegd.
  10. Ieder ingezonden werk dient voorzien te zijn van een titel.
  11. De ingezonden werken worden beoordeeld door een vakjury van kinderboekspecialisten onder wie een illustrator en de winnaar van de vorige editie. De winnaar van deze editie neemt zitting in de jury van de volgende editie.
  12. De uitspraak van de jury wordt bekendgemaakt in september 2026.
  13. De deelnemende illustratoren bewaren te allen tijde een kopie van al het ingezonden materiaal.
  14. De jury beslist over alle gevallen waarover het reglement twijfel zou kunnen laten bestaan. Over getroffen beslissingen wordt geen correspondentie gevoerd. Zij zijn onherroepelijk.

Belangrijk — AI-beleid: Het gebruik van generatieve artificiële intelligentie (AI) voor het creëren van verhaalinhoud, illustraties of voorbereidende schetsen is strikt verboden. Inzendingen die materiaal bevatten (tekst of beeld) dat door AI-tools is geproduceerd of significant gewijzigd, worden zonder uitzondering gediskwalificeerd. Deelnemers moeten op verzoek bewijs kunnen leveren van hun creatief proces. Deze clausule beschermt de integriteit van de wedstrijd en ondersteunt authentieke, menselijke creativiteit.

Digitale inzending

Gebruik het formulier op de website om je werk in te zenden. De inzending dient de volgende elementen te bevatten:

  1. Een verhaal voor kinderen van 2 tot 7 jaar, uitgeschreven op maximaal 4 A4-vellen en opgedeeld in net zoveel tekstblokken als er in het boek zullen voorkomen.
  2. Een maquette, op ware grootte, met al de platen of schetsen van het boek zoals ze daarna zullen worden uitgewerkt. De tekstblokken zijn op deze pagina's aangegeven. De tekst mag ook in de maquette staan.
  3. Drie van de hierboven vermelde platen over minimaal 1 hele pagina zijn volledig in kleur uitgewerkt. De gekozen techniek is vrij. De uitgewerkte platen mogen in de maquette zitten.
  4. De bestandsnamen bestaan uit de titel van uw werk en een nummer:

Formaat van het boek

U kiest een van de volgende standaardformaten:

250 × 260 mm
290 × 210 mm staand of liggend
235 × 325 mm

Het verhaal wordt verteld en geïllustreerd op exact 24 pagina's (cover, schutbladen en titelpagina niet inbegrepen). De originele tekeningen zijn op ware grootte. U voorziet een afloop van 5 mm.

Verhaal De literaire en kindgerichte kwaliteiten van het verhaal.
Verbeelding De verbeelding van het verhaal.
Artisticiteit De artistieke kwaliteiten van de illustraties.

Ook werken waaraan de hoofdprijs niet is toegekend kunnen in aanmerking komen om uitgegeven te worden bij Clavis. Aan de prijs en de prentenboeken die eruit voortkomen wordt veel aandacht besteed in de pers en op buitenlandse uitgeversbeurzen. Deze unieke prijs is voor veel illustratoren het begin van een succesvolle, internationale carrière.
